Scrap Metal Shear Project St. Louis, Missouri
Grossman Iron is one of St. Louis’
largest recyclers of metals. When a decision was made to
install the world’s largest steel shear at their
St. Louis processing facility, Grossman contracted with
ACME Erectors for portions
of that installation.
The production line is set up to handle large
scrap steel, such as structural shapes from railcars and
trucks, and feed if through the shear, where it is reduced
to uniform size for resmelting. ACME installed the structural
steel framing and the shear housing structure. Due to the
potential volatility of the process, the latter housing
was
built to protect those in the area of the shear, and was
field fabricated of one and one-half inch steel plate, with
continuously
welded seams.
